September 2, 2009

It's been the longest season that I can remember. We had sixteen regular season games rained out and two playoff Sundays almost rained out since opening day on April 19; but here we were under the lights for the Grand Finale. It was regular season champs Erskine Lakes against JBJ Electric with the series tied at one game each.

Corey Davis drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 1st. JBJ came back with a run in the top of the 2nd after outfielder Steve DePascale led off with a triple and was driven home on a sacrifice fly to center field by catcher Ken Hunt.

JBJ took charge of the game in the 3rd inning sending thirteen men to the plate. With one out Bill Whritenour got a base hit and Kevin Sheehan drew a walk and both men were driven home when third baseman Joe Peters banged a double. The next batter up, pitcher Bob Brown, lined a shot into the trees and trotted home behind Peters to make the score 6-1. With two men on Ken Hunt drove in his second run of the day. Paul Maurer drove in a run and shortstop Mario Van Dunk drove in a run with a triple giving JBJ a 9-1 lead.

Second baseman Kevin Sheehan led off with a single for JBJ in the top of the 4th. Joe Peters got on with an infield error which allowed Sheehan to score and Rich Mirrer cracked a two run homer to put JBJ up by eleven runs.

Erskine came back with a run in the bottom of the inning when a runner scored from third on a wild pitch. JBJ failed to score in the 5th and in the bottom of the inning Erskine posted four. Erskine second baseman Ryan Ranft led off with a walk. A one out single by Brian Phillips, who went 3-for-4 on the day, accounted for the first run. Third baseman Corey Davis stepped up and cracked a two run home run. Brian Kelly got on with a single and eventually scored on a fielders choice.

JBJ added an additional run in the top of the 6th when Rich Mirrer stroked a triple and scored on a wild pitch.  Erkine went down in order in their half of the 6th. JBJ left fielder Paul Maurer saved a sure extra base hit with a diving catch on a long ball hit off the bat of Mike DeLiso.

JBJ went down in order in the top of the 7th and Erskine could not score in the bottom of the 7th despite base hits by Pete Kelly and Brian Kelly.

And so the long season reached it's final conclusion with a new Champion. Cogradulations to the crew from JBJ Electric and to the guys from Erkine Lakes. Also, thanks to the umpires.. it's a thankless job but without you there is no game. Thanks to our sponsors and all the players for hanging in there; and thaks to the wives and girl friends who endured. See you next year !
