The unusual happened again. After league leading Kodiak Landscape Design lost their Championship Series bid to last place Sticks 'n Stones Construction, the two time defending Champs JBJ Electric got swept two game to none. It's been another great season. I enjoyed watching and reporting. By the way, Laido's Donny Giordano would like to encourage everyone to visit his restaurant Pelligrinos in North Haledon. See you next year.

Championship Series Game One - Laido Designs vs. JBJ Electric

Laido started things off with a run in the 1st on an RBI single from first baseman John Barnable.  JBJ lead off batter Bob Brown hit a very deep fly ball to left that was hauled in by Jim Ross but JBJ came up empty in the 1st inning.  Laido made it 3-0 after two innings as a result of a double off the bat of Jim Ross that knocked in two. JBJ came back to tie the game as a result of an infield error, a sacrifice fly by Rich Mirrer and a two out RBI single by John Borie.

There was no further scoring by either team until the 6th inning when Laido jumped ahead on a solo home run by second baseman Tony Catalioto. JBJ tied it up again in the bottom of the 6th on a solo shot over the left center field fence by Scott Brown. JBJ pulled off a bases loaded double play to shut down Laido in the top of the 7th. JBJ went scoreless in their half of the inning and it was on to extra innings.

In the top of the 8th leadoff batter Tony Catalioto drew a walk and was driven home as Andy Gorman stroked a double. An RBI single by shortstop Jake McDonald put Laido up by two.

The bottom of the 8th proved very controversial. Leadoff batter, Bob Brown, got on with a base hit and brother Scott Brown followed with a base hit of his own. Steve DePascale got on to load the bases.  The next batter up, Rich Mirrer, hit a liner to right field to score Bob Brown from third. Laido right fielder Andy Gorman made a throw from right field and catcher Sean Kearney put the tag on Scott Brown trying to score from third. In the uproar over whether or not Sean had blocked the plate Steve DePascale tried to score from third. Sean lunged forward and also applied the tag to Steve; two out. The next batter hit a grounder to second and was thrown out. Defending champs JBJ down one game to none.

Championship Series Game Two - JBJ Electric vs. Laido Designs

JBJ went down in order in the top of the 1st. Laido's first batter, Jim Ross, stepped up and immediately lined the first pitch over the left field fence. Pitcher Bob Brown walked the next three batters to load the bases and was relieved by Mario Van Dunk who pitched the first game. Mario proceeded to walk in a run and Andy Gorman drove in two with a base hit. He was followed by shortstop Jake McDonald who hit a home run to drive in three more. The next three batters went down to end the seven run inning.

JBJ went scoreless on only three hits for the next three innings. Meanwhile, Laido tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the 2nd. John Barnable and John Valentino both had run scoring doubles. Andy Gorman drove in two and Sean Kearney drove in two.

With the score already 13-0, Laido logged another run in the bottom of the 3rd when John Barnable got a run producing base hit. JBJ got on the board in the top of the 5th as a result of Paul Maurer's RBI single. Laido was shut down in the bottom of the 5th with beautifully executed 1-6-3 double play

JBJ logged their second run of the game in the top of the 6th when Bob Brown hit a screamer off the fence in left field for a double and was driven home with a base hit by his brother Scott. Tony Catalioto's sacrifice fly to left scored John Barnable for Laido's 15th and final run of the game.

An outfield error allowed JBJ first baseman Rich Legregni to each base. A run scoring triple by Paul Maurer helped to keep hopes alive. Second baseman Kevin Sheehan drove in the second run with a base hit. But that was all she wrote for two time defending Champion JBJ Electric.
